Portable Appliance Testing
Portable appliance testing (PAT testing) involves a series of electrical and visual inspections on all portable appliances within a place of work. These tests determine whether or not the electrical appliances are safe for use.
Many people believe that it is law that appliances in low-risk environments like offices and shops must have a PAT test carried out every year. However, the law only requires employers to ensure electrical equipment is maintained in order to prevent danger.
The Health & Safety Executive state that almost 25% of all reportable electrical accidents at work involve portable equipment so it is advisable to consider the type of appliance used and the nature of its use, which in turn would determine the level of inspection and testing advisable.
